What’s the difference between CBD hemp Flower and marijuana (Skunk)?
The main difference, really, is the amount of THC present in both plants. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a compound found in Cannabis. It’s the THC in cannabis, that actually gets you high. Marijuana contains very high levels of THC, sometimes as much as 25%. Hemp flower on the other hand has a nominal amount (under 0.2%). So for this reason hemp flower produces no psychoactive effects.
Hemp flower, does however have high levels of CBD. CBD (cannabidiol) is another compound of the Cannabis plant. Although it doesn’t get you high, it is very similar to THC, in fact, they have exactly the same molecular structure. It is only the arrangement of their atoms that is different.
CBD hemp flower, whilst it doesn’t get you high, does have effects which can be felt. The effects are less overwhelming than with marijuana, so there’s no paranoia, anxiety or just that brain-dead stoned feeling. But don’t get it wrong the effects of CBD flower are still very noticeable. They range from energising and genuinely euphoric to relaxing and calming. Hence people using CBD flower to help deal with things like anxiety and stress.
How come CBD doesn’t get you as high as THC if they’re so similar?
This is due to their interaction with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. As part of the endocannabinoid system we have certain receptors called CB1 receptors which are located throughout the body. Though it is the brain in particular where we find them most abundantly. In the brain there is very dense concentrations of CB1 receptors.
THC gets you high by binding to the CB1 receptors in the brain when marijuana is ingested. THC binds strongly to CB1 receptors located in the basal ganglia, cerebellum and the hippocampus. Thusly it can have an effect on some of the processes that these areas of the brain are responsible for. Or in other words get you high.
Due the the different arrangement of atoms in their molecular structure CBD doesn’t bind to our CB1 receptors. (Or it does just ever so slightly in the presence of THC). So CBD doesn’t produce the strong “high” effects of THC.
Does CBD hemp flower taste and smell different to marijuana?
No not really, because the taste and scents of cannabis are not produced by THC, but instead they are produced by a group of simple hydrocarbons known as terpenes. It’s the terpenes in their various amounts and combinations that give each strain it’s particular taste and aroma.
In fact you can now even get pure terpenes to add to your favourite herbal blends, CBD bud, or other CBD products to enhance the flavour and aroma. This is called the entourage effect.
CBD flower or CBD bud can be used as a great legal alternative to marijuana. Or as many people use it as a CBD tea. More and more people are moving over to and buying CBD flower to take advantage of the host of benefits which CBD can offer.
